Stepping into the Flow…

“Keep writing,
keep singing,
keep weaving the broken parts
of you back into yourself…
Keep breathing slow,
keep letting go,
keep hoping,
keep flowing.”

—Jaine Rose (Jaine Rose – artist)

When I was a tired and tender new mother, I read a poem by Andrea Pothos that included the phrase “unclench your life.” I feel like this is something that I’ve been working on throughout my parenting journey and my spiritual life. My book, Walking with Persephone, was in many ways a journey of unclenching my life, of unknotting, deconstructing and reweaving. My newest book, The Great Between, offers prayers for times of unraveling. When I step into the cauldron each August and begin to steep, I am also unclenching my life, deepening, restoring, and renewing. Now, we have stepped out of the cauldron and are in the months Between–between the cauldron and the cave. As we journey through the final months of this year, we are invited to evaluate and review, to contemplate and renew. Our theme for September’s #30DaysofGoddess is “Flow” and I have found myself considering what it looks like to step out of the cauldron and into the flow. One of the powerful lessons of this year for me has been to continue to lean into what’s arising, to participate in life’s unfolding as it unfolds, instead of wrestling with or controlling it. I have been reminded again and again that mine is a living practice, an ongoing process of remembering, reclaiming, and returning.

As I’ve considered these themes, I decided to offer a simple and nurturing “Step into the Flow” video series on Patreon on Fridays. Joining at the $5 level gets you access to this series as well as to our weekly live community practices on Mondays! It is well worth it for the boost of nourishment and inspiration each week. We will explore together what it means to step into the flow, to be responsive to our own lives, AND how important it is to keep lifting that small fist of resistance. This four week series offers spots of time for your soul and sacred pauses to reflect in a gentle retreat-style container.

And, if you are wondering “how on earth do I unclench my life?” or “what does it mean to step into the flow?” or “what practice could help me step into the flow?” here is a practice and prayer all in one that you can use to help you unclench your life–or at least moments of your life–this month and step into the flow:

There is a new day before me
full of grace and possibility.
I step into the sacred.
I settle into my own skin.
I feel the earth hold me
and the sky enfold me.
I feel wind kiss my shoulders
and sunshine touch my skin.
I feel the spark of the infinite
alight within me,
the pulse of the holy in my own veins.
I fold my hands in prayer pose
at my heart
and feel peace.
I lift them to my forehead
and feel clarity.
I bring them to my lips
and feel trust.
I return them to my heart
and feel connected.
I move with ease
into the flow of this day’s unfolding.
