Poem: The First Breaths of Spring

We are still in the liminal,
held between
the last whispers of winter
and the first breaths of spring.
The weather is erratic,
swinging wildly
between sun drenched warmth
and gray stillness,
summer in the sun
and winter in the shade.*
We can feel this reflected
in our own bodies and minds
as well
feeling the quick bubbling
of new ideas
urging us forward
and the last embrace of the cave
urging caution,
pausing before reaching too far too fast,
lest a late frost
crisp our dreams
and still our hopes.
When we stop to listen
to the land beneath our feet,
we remember
there is no forcing required,
we do not need
to conjure blooms out of rest
or claw projects
out of contemplation
and into being.
The flowering happens
in its own good time.
May we trust
the unfolding cycle of creativity
in which we move.
Yes, sometimes
we need to keep going,
to push past the hurdles
and crack through into the sun.
And sometimes,
we need to pause,
to take a break,
to rest before pushing onward,
trusting that we will know
when it is time to bloom.

(*”Summer in the sun and winter in the shade” is a line from Charles Dickens.)
